Tips on Tuesday

Last week we spoke about resharing content on Facebook in this post.

For today’s Tip we are visiting the same topic on Twitter.  Last week, Twitter announced that they were making it possible for users to retweet their own content, which makes sharing your posts much easier.

Don’t be afraid to share your content again with a “have you seen this” or “we spoke about this here”.  As long as you don’t spam your followers it is a perfectly valid marketing tool to ensure what you have said is seen.

For today’s tip we’re visiting something very small but very important.  The favicon.

Favicon Aire Media Bingley

So what is a favicon?  A favicon (short for favourite icon) is an icon associated with a particular website.  This is usually displayed in the address bar of a browser or next to the site name in a user’s list of bookmarks.

Are they important?  We think yes, they are!  Whilst a very small thing and not essential to the running of a site they show an attention to detail which makes your company stand out.  From a branding point of view, favicons are vital as they make your brand appear even in the tiniest spaces.

So – this week we are setting some homework.  If you haven’t got a favicon, make sure you have by next week!  They are very easy to create yourself by using a free web tool.

For today’s tip we are concentrating solely on Pinterest.

Clients often ask me is there any mileage in having a presence on Pinterest as they can’t see how it is relevant for them.

Some interesting statistics for Pinterest: –

  • 10 million unique monthly UK visitors
  • 80% of users use Pinterest on a mobile
  • 70% of users are female
  • 70% of people will take action on pins (whether buying online/purchasing in store).

I think the most startling of those statistics is the heavy proportion of female users and if you run a business with a high level of female custom it would certainly seem sensible to have a vibrant Pinterest presence.

My opinion is that it is worth having a presence everywhere on social media.  You need to be seen.  So even if you feel like you might not have a target market on Pinterest I do think it worthwhile to create and curate an account.  It certainly gives your brand another vehicle to be noticed.

Today’s tip focuses on making your social media accounts easily accessible.  Ensure your social media icons are clearly visible on your website.  Also, for those of you who use a free website building tool, make sure you change the social media accounts from those of the site host to your own.  There is nothing worse for a customer than thinking “we’d really like to see what these people are saying” to find that when they try to follow you on Twitter or Facebook they find someone completely different.   And, we have said this before, but ALWAYS make sure your social media accounts open in a new tab or window.

Half the battle is ensuring your methods for communication are visible.  Remember no-one will know what you’re saying if they can’t find you!

See you next time!

Tips on Tuesday

Hello all.  We are all rejuvenated following a short break so we’re back with today’s tip and this is one that can apply to all social media channels.

I’m often asked by clients about the use of scheduling tools such as Hootsuite for social media posts and whether they’re a good idea.

Pic of Schedule Aire Media

I think that they can be a very useful tool IF you don’t rely solely on them.  They’re very useful for standard messages but the beauty of social media is its spontaneity and I think you can lose the power to tap into breaking stories if you don’t check your social media feeds personally.

There has also been some controversy surrounding the use of scheduled posts during tragic world events.  My take would be don’t let this put you off, but possibly discretion is the better part of valour and it may be wise to turn off scheduled posts if something major happens.  At the end of the day whether you agree or not, you don’t want to be the subject of a social media rant about insensitivity, your social media profile has to be impeccable.

So my conclusion is, yes use them.  But don’t rely on them and don’t lose that personal touch!

See you next time!

Tips on Tuesday

A slightly different format to our usual Tips on Tuesday slot as today is Safer Internet Day.  The safety of young people on the internet is one of our passions at Aire Media – in fact, we launched with a post about helping parents make sure their children are using Social media safely – so we thought we would #shareaheart with the wonderful people at the UK Safer Internet Centre and share our top tips for young people to stay safe online.

Safer Internet Day Aire Media

  1.  Never reveal your passwords to other people.  Choose a password that is really strong by using a mix of letters and numbers.  Make sure you change them regularly.
  2. Make sure you think before you post.   Never post anything you wouldn’t want your parents or teachers to read.  As soon as you press send, the information/image is no longer private.
  3. Be kind.  If you think your post could upset someone, don’t post it.
  4. Be really careful about what you share online.  Don’t give clues about where you live in either the information or the images you post.
  5. Make sure you check your privacy settings regularly.  Bear in mind that you might think you’re only sharing something amongst close friends, but that isn’t always the case.
  6. Be careful who you talk to online.  If someone you don’t know tries to add you as a friend, ignore them and block them.   Don’t give people online your address and phone number.

Social media platforms have an age limit for a reason.  It is to keep young people safe.  The people at Linneyville made this brilliant infographic giving details of the age limits across all social media channels.

Today’s tip focuses on this little chap.  The hashtag.

Hashtag Aire Media Image

Let’s face it, before Twitter what on earth was this character for?!  Now however, the hashtag is a useful tool – you can use a variety of hashtags to get your tweets noticed.  You can either create your own or simply find out what is trending and utilise current popular talking points to get what you want to say out there.

A word of warning though.  #Don’t #over #use #the #hashtag.  #It #can #get #really #irritating.  See what I mean?

See you soon for more snippets of social media advice!

Tips on Tuesday

For today’s tip – our very last of 2015 – we would like to discuss Twitter.

Don’t make the mistake of only tweeting during “work hours”.  Make sure you regularly update your feed both in the evening and at weekends.  If this isn’t physically possible for you to do, there are a number of packages available that enable you to schedule tweets to appear at different times.

Don’t miss a potential audience when you can tap into that group with a little organisation!

We will be back in 2016 with a whole new series of tips.  Until then, enjoy the festive season and Merry Christmas!

Twitter Launches the Moments Feature

As you checked your Twitter feed in the last couple of days you may have noticed this icon: –

TwitterMomentsPic

This week Twitter have launched their “Moments” feature in the UK for its 15 million users, which intends to bring Twitter users the “best” stories each day by means of a slide show.  Curators will be collecting stories on a single subject into managed lists, which are then accessible by using the lightning bolt icon, which appears on your menu bar at the bottom of the Twitter app on a device and along the top of the screen on a desktop.   Within the UK the Curators are a group of journalists together with 18 production partners including BuzzFeed, The Sun, Sky News, Sky Sports, BT Sports, Have I Got News For You and others from a wide range of areas.

The Moments tab will be divided into categories for further ease of use.   In a blog post on the launch of Moments, Twitter said: –

“For stories that update very frequently – like live sporting events or awards shows where it’s critical to know what’s happening minute by minute – you’ll see an option to follow the Moment, which blends the Tweets directly into your timeline.

“That way you can keep track of the latest updates in real-time without having to tap back and forth between tabs. When that story ends, so do the Tweets, leaving your timeline just as it was before.”

TwitterMomentsPic2

The main advantage of the Moments feature is that you will see tweets from people – even if you don’t follow them – in a carefully collated list.   You can then share or retweet the Moments as with any other tweet.

The UK is the first European country to adopt Moments and in the New Year, Promoted Moments will be available in order for businesses to use the feature in a profitable way.
