Tips on Tuesday

Quite simply we are all a fan of the hashtag.

Using hashtags is a great way of buying into trending topics and accessing an audience who isn’t necessarily following you. But did you know there’s such a thing as too many hashtags?

Whilst it’s really important to use relevant hashtags important to both you as a brand, and the topic you’re discussing you don’t want to dilute your message.  In fact, although some platforms (such as Instagram) allow use of up to 30 hashtags per post, research has found the optimum number to be just 11. On platforms such as Twitter with a character limit, it is important that you do not lose valuable space for your actual message by trying to use too many!

Do your research, use important and valuable hashtags, and remember the old cliché, it’s quality over quantity!

Your purpose, of course, on social media is really to try and sell your offering.

However, we really recommend you avoid flooding your feed with hardcore or overt selling.

Social media is primarily a fun way to connect with friends and brands you’re interested in and you might find if your social media timelines are simply post after post sharing what you’re selling you will see people unfollow your content.

Rather than selling, your initial objective on your social media channels should be increasing your brand awareness by increasing your following.  The best way to achieve this is to create engaging and fun content.

We prefer to use the 80/20 rule – where 80% of our content is interesting, engaging, or fun and only 20% is direct selling.

Do you need to revisit your strategy?

Friends forever!

Have you seen posts on Facebook asking you to tag a friend? If you haven’t, have YOU thought about posting relatable “tag a friend” content?

Try posting a relevant image to your business (maybe a new product, or your latest offer) and asking your audience to tag their friends. This is a great way of increasing engagement, increasing brand awareness, and gaining new followers without feeling overtly promotional.

Who doesn’t like to win something?!

A quick and easy way – with relatively little investment – to increase your followers is to run a competition or giveaway on your social media channels. By engaging with these types of posts, your audience can assist you in getting a much greater reach!

Make sure you adhere to any terms and conditions on whichever platform you use, and ensure you include YOUR terms and conditions within the post. To run a successful competition, choose winners randomly and be transparent in the drawing of a winner (using a randomisation tool, and a video is great for this) and make sure you deliver on the prizes or giveaways promised! A prize handover is a really great way to get some feel-good content for your pages!
