Growing up Digital – A Report

A report released today by the Children’s Commissioner Anne Longfield  entitled Growing Up Digital has stated that children are left to “fend for themselves” against the pitfalls of being on the internet such as online bullying or grooming.

Ms Longfield stated “The internet is an incredible force for good, but it is wholly irresponsible to let them roam in a world for which they are ill-prepared”.   It is felt that social media applications in particular have a wealth of difficult to understand Terms and Conditions which leaves children unsure as to what they’re signing up for, including “hidden clauses” waiving privacy rights and allowing content children have posted to be sold.

One of the recommendations in the report was that children should study “digital citizenship” to learn about their rights and responsibilities online, so they are prepared for online activities.  At Aire Media we’re passionate about online safety and offer a variety of training sessions for children and their parents.  We feel it is really important that children are given the tools to harness the full potential of all the wonderful things the internet has to offer whilst maintaining their own safety.

Our rules for online safety remain: –

  • Take note of age regulations on social media platforms.  Whilst they seem arbitrary, we believe that children aged 13+ are much more emotionally equipped to deal with online safety than a younger child.
  • Always go through the Terms and Conditions of new sites your children are signing up to with them and ensure both you and they understand the clauses they are agreeing to.
  • Always make sure your child has their privacy settings as high as possible.
  • Keep dialogue open with your children  – ensure they feel comfortable in discussing what they’re doing online with you.

We wrote an in-depth piece on social media safety entitled SOCIAL MEDIA FOR CHILDREN FRIEND OR FOE.  If you would like to talk to us more about what we can offer in terms of advice for children or how we can work with parents to ensure they’re fully versed in keeping their children as safe as possible on social media, please get in touch with us.

Tips on Tuesday

We’re back bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and ready to jump straight into our Tips on Tuesday segment.

For January we’re going to be giving general tips to get you back into the mindset of achieving as much as you can from your online presence.

Our very first tip of 2017 is…….organisation!

Image of definition of organisation

Take time in your first week of the year to have a think about your online presence.  Make a basic schedule of when you’d like to make posts on social media, schedule when you have important announcements to make or when you want your marketing campaigns to begin, have a think about what national events or industry specific events are coming up that you want to tap into.

Although it feels like you have a huge blank page ahead, making some basic plans now will mean that your time will be more efficiently spent throughout the year and most importantly you won’t overlook your social media presence during busy times.

Tips on Tuesday

For our final Tip on Tuesday of 2016 (yes, even we’re having a rest next week!) we’re giving you a generic tip.

Christmas TreeIt is ok to have a rest over the holidays!  Missing a couple of days of tweets or Facebook posts isn’t the end of the world.  In fact, looking after YOU and your employees and making sure they have a break is probably the best contribution towards marketing you can make.

When you’re rested and refreshed you will face the challenges of digital marketing and your online presence with renewed zeal.

From Aire Media we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful and productive 2017!

Tips on Tuesday

Today’s tip is a generic social media tip.

Social Media Definition

And our social media tip is……..have it!  Whilst you make not think you need a social media presence, it is too good a free market to remain untapped.

The average person has five social media accounts and spends a whopping 1 hour and 40 minutes browsing these accounts every day so if that person happens to stumble across your brand whilst they’re browsing……there’s a potential for free advertising right there!

Tips on Tuesday

For today’s tip we’re going to give an important piece of advice about Twitter.

TwitterTipsAireMedia

Make sure you make the most of Twitter by following people relevant to your sector.  From local organisations to industry leaders it is really important to forge relationships and find out what other people in your industry are saying!

Interact with the people you follow – you will find your own followers start to increase as you become more involved with other people in your industry.

Tips on Tuesday

For today’s tip we’re going to have a look at Facebook.

Facebook Aire Media Blog

Whilst the nature of Facebook lends itself to lengthier posts than most of its social media rivals, just remember volume isn’t everything!

Whilst you can make use of the longer space, only write what you need to.  Don’t let your message get lost in verbose posts.  Some of the best posts – whilst slightly longer than what you might find on Twitter – are snappy and to the point.

Make your message count and be seen.

Tips on Tuesday

For this week we’re going to have a look at Twitter

TwitterTipsAireMediaIf you’re using a Twitter account for business purposes it is really important that whoever is using the account is consistent in tone.  Remember your account is in effect the company and so its important to maintain a constant and professional presence at all times.

Even if the account is managed by different staff, make sure they’re all clear about how you want the account to be used and what is and isn’t appropriate!  The public will only see the company, not the different people who are behind the avatar so keep it neutral, informative and polite.

Tips on Tuesday

Ok, so another Facebook visit for today’s Tip on Tuesday but we think this is a really useful one after a client found they were having problems.

Facebook page Image

Our client wasn’t able to make changes to the Short Description section on their Facebook “About” page.   Although they were trying to change the text, Facebook was not allowing them to input new text.  We found the following methods which allows changes to be made: –

  1. On your business page, selection the “About” section
  2. Select “Page Info”
  3. Select the edit icon for the section “Short Description”
  4. Remove the current text.
  5. Select “save changes”.
  6. Refresh your browser
  7. The “Short Description” section should now be removed and you will see a “write a short description for your page” which will allow you to input a new description.

Unfortunately a rather long-winded way of making small edits but we found copying and pasting into Word made the process much quicker!

Tips on Tuesday

For today’s Tip on Tuesday, we’re going to chat a little about one of the free tools on Facebook you can use to help keep your company visible.

Facebook Aire Media Blog

Why not ask your clients or customers to “check in” on Facebook when they visit you?  Many people really like this tool on Facebook, and use it almost like a diary.

Whilst you’re not actively doing any marketing and therefore using none of your marketing budget, it does mean that friends of your client see where they’re checking in and notice your name.  And being noticed is so, so valuable!

See you next time!
