Tips on Tuesday

Quite simply we are all a fan of the hashtag.

Using hashtags is a great way of buying into trending topics and accessing an audience who isn’t necessarily following you. But did you know there’s such a thing as too many hashtags?

Whilst it’s really important to use relevant hashtags important to both you as a brand, and the topic you’re discussing you don’t want to dilute your message.  In fact, although some platforms (such as Instagram) allow use of up to 30 hashtags per post, research has found the optimum number to be just 11. On platforms such as Twitter with a character limit, it is important that you do not lose valuable space for your actual message by trying to use too many!

Do your research, use important and valuable hashtags, and remember the old cliché, it’s quality over quantity!

Your purpose, of course, on social media is really to try and sell your offering.

However, we really recommend you avoid flooding your feed with hardcore or overt selling.

Social media is primarily a fun way to connect with friends and brands you’re interested in and you might find if your social media timelines are simply post after post sharing what you’re selling you will see people unfollow your content.

Rather than selling, your initial objective on your social media channels should be increasing your brand awareness by increasing your following.  The best way to achieve this is to create engaging and fun content.

We prefer to use the 80/20 rule – where 80% of our content is interesting, engaging, or fun and only 20% is direct selling.

Do you need to revisit your strategy?

True friends are always together in spirit.” ~ L.M. Montgomery

Friends forever!

Have you seen posts on Facebook asking you to tag a friend? If you haven’t, have YOU thought about posting relatable “tag a friend” content?

Try posting a relevant image to your business (maybe a new product, or your latest offer) and asking your audience to tag their friends. This is a great way of increasing engagement, increasing brand awareness, and gaining new followers without feeling overtly promotional.

Who doesn’t like to win something?!

A quick and easy way – with relatively little investment – to increase your followers is to run a competition or giveaway on your social media channels. By engaging with these types of posts, your audience can assist you in getting a much greater reach!

Make sure you adhere to any terms and conditions on whichever platform you use, and ensure you include YOUR terms and conditions within the post. To run a successful competition, choose winners randomly and be transparent in the drawing of a winner (using a randomisation tool, and a video is great for this) and make sure you deliver on the prizes or giveaways promised! A prize handover is a really great way to get some feel-good content for your pages!

“social media”

noun

Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Hello….is it us you’re looking for?!

The fundamental reason we’re all on social media is to communicate, so don’t forget to implement methods to encourage engagement within your marketing plans.

A great way to get people talking is, very simply, to ask them a question. “What do you think?”, “which do you prefer?”, “how do you feel about…?”. You can always add a Call to Action within your posts to encourage your readers to get in touch!

Do the images you use in your social media posts meet our rule of six?!

Camera

We know that posts that contain images perform better on social media, but how do you find the perfect image to accompany your post.

We’ve created a handy guide to help you choose the right image: –

  1. Are the images good quality? Images for social media don’t need to be professional quality but they need to be crisp and clear.
  2. Are they attractive? Images must add value to your post – an unattractive image will do the opposite!
  3. Are the images relevant? Make sure the image you choose has some bearing to the content of the post; choosing an image purely because it looks nice despite having no context is not a useful strategy.
  4. Is the image easy to see? If the image is too dark or too small, it will bring little value.
  5. Use text in your images sparingly; remember screen reading devices cannot read text on images so to make your posts accessible put the main text in your post.
  6. Add branding where necessary. Not every image will need branding especially if your profile shots are your logo, but if you choose to do so remember good branding is noticeable but not obtrusive.

Have fun, enjoy creating and improve your social media channels by adding some great images!

Tips on Tuesday

Whilst you want to be consistent in the frequency of your posting, make sure you mix up the rest of the details!

Time

Rather than always post at the same time, why not experiment with being active on your social media channels at various times and days e.g. outside normal business hours or on weekends.  By changing when you post, you have the opportunity to engage with a whole different audience.

You can use the analytical tools available on any social media channel to find out when you’re most successful posting time is and reformulate your social media plan to encompass those popular times!

We always think this time of year is a great time to practice some self-care and that goes for your social media channels too!

An easy way to ensure you’re looking your best online is to check your bios! Make sure they’re up to date and if not, update with any new or important information.

Make sure you include a link to your website (and please ensure it’s working; there’s nothing more likely to turn a potential customer off than a broken link!) and keep your bios consistent across all platforms.

Are you looking your best?

Tips on Tuesday

It’s no surprise as we were forced to remain physically distant in 2020, that social media rose to prominence in many marketing strategies, and that is set to continue in 2021.

Meeting2

When creating your social media strategies, focus on engagement, not views or follows/likes.  A big list of followers is not sufficient alone to promote your business, you must convince your viewers to engage with you by creating excellent and interesting content.  Engagement is always a two-way street and ensure you respond to all comments left on your content.

Try and consider what is more important; 1000 followers who simply scroll by your content or 250 engaged followers who will respond, converse and turn that engagement into actively becoming a customer.

Tips on Tuesday

Many of us feel that, despite our plans to go positively into a new year, the rug has been well and truly pulled from under our feet.

Today’s tip is a more broad one than purely social media; and that is give yourself the gift of time.  Allow yourself to digest the news of a new lockdown and the impact that will have and don’t feel you have to immediately make – and communicate – decisions.

Once you have formulated your plan, make sure you communicate any changes made to your usual business practices across your online presence and your social media channels.  Do what you need to get through the next few weeks and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Stay safe, keep at it and we WILL get through this.
