Tips on Tuesday

We love a plan.  We especially love a social media marketing plan – you really need a firm outline of your social media aims and needs to make your channels as useful as possible.

Change directionHowever, we’re also a fan of flexibility and the ability to change direction.

If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that the best laid plans often come to nought and that it is ok to deviate from your plan.  We think of our social media plans as a guideline; the type of document you stick to when everything is normal rather than a piece of work that is set in stone.

As we’re faced daily with announcements and changes, don’t worry if you have to deviate from your plan.  Don’t worry if you haven’t the headspace to post for a few days and miss some posts you had planned.  There is always time to catch up.  Christmas is also a great time of year for some ad hoc posting – something away from the planned posts and the potential to have a little spontaneous fun.

The most successful plans we have seen, whilst giving an overview of aims and content strands also allow the user to be flexible when necessary and acknowledges that this is very likely!

We spoke last week about the important of Inclusive Design and over the next few weeks we’re going to be giving bitesize tips on how to make your social media acessible.

Hashtag image

You’re on social media, you’re using a hashtag right?  Did you know that for best practice when you’re using hashtags, always use CamelCase and capitalise the first letter of every word?

Not only does this mean  that screen readers can read out the hashtags correctly, it also makes them easier to read for everybody else.

This is something we’re certainly going to focus us going forward in our social media posts!

Did you know that YouTube isn’t just a website, it’s a search engine?  And in fact it is the second largest search engine behind Google!

Video productionThat statistic alone should encourage you to use video on your social channels including a branded YouTube channel.

Video is a fantastic tool to hook your audience simply because they’re very easy to consume. Social media success lies in your ability to condense information down into easily digestible snippets of content that is long enough to maintain viewers’ attention but short enough to leave them wanting more; and what better way to do this than a video!

Whilst a huge budget on video content isn’t necessary, do make sure your social media videos have decent picture quality and clear sound quality!

Try creating a small (no more than 60 seconds), but relevant video for your social media channels, give it an engaging title and useful hashtags and measure your performance using the analytical tools available!

Have you a goal?

Goal

Now football has resumed in England, albeit behing closed doors we started thinking about other goals!  What is your social media goal?

I’m sure most people will want to use their social media to sell their product or service and that is fine; a great goal.

But you can’t do that unless people see what you post.  Your very first social media goal should simply be to stop the scroll!  Catch people’s attention so they don’t swipe passed your post.

Are your posts engaging with a good image? Spend a little time being adventurous and finding creative ways to catch people’s attention.  After all if you stop the scroll, they may well purchase from you – achieving your other social goals!!

Tips on Tuesday

Remember to have fun with your social media feeds.

FunIf things have been different for you during lockdown, and you’re not yet in a position to reopen your business you might be running out of relevant content for your social media feeds.

Don’t be afraid to create posts not directly relevant to your business and especially try and have fun.  Tapping into trending topics can be useful – if it’s #NationalBiscuitDay why not share yours? Create a poll of several options and encourage your followers to interact.

Are you using the time away from normality to rearrange your premises or carry out essential repairs? Don’t forget to document these for your followers.

Why not share images of your work at home space or share tips that work for you for efficient working.

Remember if it isn’t offensive, there’s no such thing as wrong content.  Have a play, have fun and populate your timelines!

Tips on Tuesday

We often look at how you can create content that will enrich your social media feeds for your audience.

Listen

Don’t forget you can use your social media to listen to your audience and find out what they want from you.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions to garner opinion; “did we do this right?”, “which colour of this item do you prefer”.

Remember creating meaningful interaction not only gives you free market research, but also creates relationships with your customers.  After all, a customer is going to be interested in a company that listens to them and gives them what they want!

As we remain in a new normal, it is more important than ever – and could be the difference between survival or not – to listen and adapt how your customers require.

Tips on Tuesday

Remember in order to have a successful social media presence, you need to get social (yup, the clue is in the title!)

Conversation

The way we market our products and ourselves is ever-evolving.  When we used traditional marketing methods such as print, television and radio we were talking at people.  Now we have channels where we can talk with people; the aim is to create a place where mutual conversations can take place!

At a time when online conversations are more important than ever, have a think about how you can start some meaningful interaction.  Something as simple as asking your clients how they are, whether they need anything or how they’re coping with lockdown can make an important impact.  Why not ask for opinions on your products; try a poll and ask for the favourite between two items etc.

Whilst you can’t see your customers face to face it is vital that you keep that online dialogue open and flowing!

Tips on Tuesday

Remember what is the ultimate goal on social media – regular engagement from your followers to create a really strong online brand.

Message

An important consideration when dealing with your social media schedule is how you are going to manage your notifications.  Whether you receive a message, or someone comments on one of your posts it is important to respond in a reasonable amount of time.  Even if you choose a tool like an automated message response on Facebook, a timely reply from a real person is still important.

If you don’t want notifications turned on – which is understandable if you are getting a large number – why not set aside some blocks of time each day to deal with and respond to notifications?

You can also use the various analytical tools to monitor which of your posts gets most interaction, which will enable you to manage notifications more thoroughly.

Tips on Tuesday

Do you ever feel tempted to write really long posts on Facebook simply because there isn’t a character limit?

STOP!!

Quality

It is such a cliché but it is so true, it really is quality over quantity.  Don’t fall into the trap of feeling you have to fill space.  Short, snappy posts work as well on Facebook as other platforms.  Did you know the ideal length of a Facebook post is 40 – 80 characters; post that are less than 80 characters receiving on average 88% more engagement.

Obviously your post must make sense, but look at using language creatively for shorter Facebook content.

Tips on Tuesday

Emojis…just for kids right? WRONG!!

Emojis

Did you know the use of a relevant emoji can increase engagement on Tweets by up to 25%, whilst using them on Facebook can increase likes and comments or shares by 57% and 33% respectively.

Love them or hate them, emojis can certainly be a useful tool to have at your disposal.  Why not try adding pertinent emojis to your social media posts and monitor whether your interactions improve!
