Tips on Tuesday

If you’re in charge of your company’s social media accounts, it can be really hard not to focus on how many followers or “likes” you have.

An important thing to remember is, whilst it is always a great idea to use the analytics social media channels provide to gauge your performance, the number of followers you have isn’t necessarily the best metric to measure how successful your social strategy is.

What matters most, is the level of connection and relationship with your followers, rather than the number.

Try and shift your mindset from numbers to relationships!

Stop that scroll!

We cannot say this enough times but make your content eye-catching!

People don’t read social media channels in full, they scan their timelines quickly and transiently, only stopping when something catches their interest.

Your unique challenge on social media is to stop that scroll!

The first post of call is a captivating image. Secondly make sure your copy isn’t overly verbose and really tells a story in a few words. Make any calls to action clear and efficient – win the battle by allowing your customers to shop, contact or book in with just a single click.

Don’t be afraid to stand out on social media, if you’re doing it for the right reasons then you’re engaging with people who will potentially become your customers!

Tips on Tuesday

You know what they say about first impressions, and your social media profile picture is the online equivalent of a first impression!

Is there such a thing as the perfect profile picture?  Probably not, but excellence is the next best thing!

Simply, use your logo in a size to fit into the space!  Your profile picture needs to be instantly recognisable, even at small-scale and of good resolution.  If your logo is too large or the wrong shape to work well as a profile shot, consider creating a smaller version of part of your logo for social media purposes.

The key is consistency across all your branding so ensure you use the same image as a profile shot across all your social media channels.

Tips on Tuesday

A lot of our Tips on Tuesday are about how you can use social media to promote your online presence, but it is always worth thinking about the mechanics of social media and more generic online matters.

Today’s tip is a really simple one. Think about your online security. Make sure you don’t have the same password for all your social media accounts and make the password something strong and difficult to crack. After all you wouldn’t have the same PIN for all your bank cards would you…WOULD you?!

It is important to maintain your social accounts as professionally as possible – and by having strong and secure passwords you are minimising the risk of hacking.

Tips on Tuesday

Social media feedback is instant; so, don’t be afraid to use it!

If you get a positive review on Facebook or Google, or someone tweets about your company, don’t be afraid to share that out and draw people’s attention to it. Similarly, if you get a physical expression of thanks into the office whether a card, a letter, or a gift – this is superb social content.

Good news is brilliant; blowing your own trumpet through genuine examples of customer satisfaction is a fantastic way to show people how good you are at what you do!

Tips on Tuesday

Have you thought about setting your social media strategies seasonally?

Whilst it may seem obvious if your business offering is seasonal, for those who aren’t in a season-specific industry you might like to try changing your strategy by setting some season-specific goals or creating a marketing theme for each season. How can you use summer for example to create a relevant and innovative new theme of posts for your business?

You can even take this further stylistically by giving your social media channels a distinctive look in each season by use of carefully planned image and colour-scheme.

Never be afraid to have fun – and this could be a wonderful way of creating interesting content or themes whilst staying true to your core ethos.

Tips on Tuesday

It is no secret times are hard, so here are some easy ways you can help small businesses grow on social media: –

  1. Give them a follow/like.  A very easy one but important.
  2. Share their content.  If you see something you think your friends might be interested in, share the love!
  3. If you’ve bought a product or used a service, why not tell people? Leaving a review takes very little time but means the world!
  4. If you see something that interests you on their timeline, comment on the post and tell them so!
  5. Check in to their premises.  People will remember where you’ve been!
  6. If you’re a member of a local group on social media, people often ask for recommendations; word of mouth is still so important!

Give it a try and spread the love; who will you help out today?

Tips on Tuesday

Do you ever feel tempted to write lengthy posts on Facebook simply because there isn’t a character limit?

STOP!!

It is such a cliché, but it is so true, it really is quality over quantity.  Don’t fall into the trap of feeling you have to fill space. Short, snappy posts work as well on Facebook as other platforms. Did you know the ideal length of a Facebook post is 40 – 80 characters; posts that are less than 80 characters receiving on average 88% more engagement.

Obviously, your post must make sense, but look at using language creatively for shorter Facebook content.

Tips on Tuesday

It can be really tempting to feel that as a business you should have a presence on every available social media channel. After all, more channels mean more exposure, right? Not necessarily!

Rather than spreading yourself too thin and creating content for channels that are not relevant to your offering or customer, take some time to think about how directing your social media strategy could be useful.

Identify your audience, and then use that information to create social media accounts on the most relevant channels. For example, if your offering is mostly B2B, a LinkedIn account is a must, whereas if you’re selling directly to teens think about newer platforms such as TikTok, if your products mean you need to target parents, Facebook is the place for you!

Start your social media journey by choosing the most relevant channels for you and make your content innovative and engaging, you can always expand to other channels in the future if your core offering evolves.
