You know what they say about first impressions, and your social media profile picture is the online equivalent of a first impression!

Is there such a thing as the perfect profile picture?  Probably not, but excellence is the next best thing!

Simply, use your logo in a size to fit into the space!  Your profile picture needs to be instantly recognisable, even at fairly small-scale and of good resolution.  If you logo is too large or the wrong shape to work well as a profile shot, consider creating a smaller version of part of your logo for social media purposes.

The key is consistency across all your branding.  Use the same image as a profile shot across all your social media channels.

Do you ever feel tempted to write really long posts on Facebook simply because there isn’t a character limit?

STOP!!

It is such a cliché but it is so true, it really is quality over quantity.  Don’t fall into the trap of feeling you have to fill space.  Short, snappy posts work as well on Facebook as other platforms.  Did you know the ideal length of a Facebook post is 40 – 80 characters; post that are less than 80 characters receiving on average 88% more engagement.

Obviously your post must make sense, but look at using language creatively for shorter Facebook content.

Have you thought about setting your social media strategies seasonally?

Whilst it may seem obvious if your business offering is seasonal, for those who aren’t in a season-specific industry you might like to try changing your strategy by setting some season-specific goals or creating a marketing theme for each season.  How can you use summer for example to create a relevant and innovative new theme of posts for your business?

You can even take this further stylistically by giving your social media channels a different look in each season by use of carefully planned image and colour-scheme.

Never be afraid to have fun – and this could be a great way of creating interesting content or themes whilst staying true to your core ethos.

We can’t say this enough times, but make your content eye-catching!

People don’t read social media channels in full, then scan their timelines quickly and transiently, only stopping when something catches their interest.

Your unique challenge on social media is to stop the scroll! The first post of call is a captivating image. Secondly make sure your copy isn’t overly verbose and really tells a story in a few words. Make any calls to action clear and efficient – win the battle by allowing your customers to shop, contact or book in with just a single click.

Don’t be afraid to stand out on social media; if you’re doing it for the right reasons then you’re engaging with people who will potentially become your customers!

Tips on Tuesday

It can be really tempting to feel that as a business you should have a presence on every available social media channel.  After all, more channels mean more exposure, right? Not necessarily!

Rather than spreading yourself too thin and creating content for channels that aren’t relevant to your offering or customer, take some time to think where directing your social media strategy would be most successful.

Identify your audience, and then use that information to create social media accounts on the most relevant channels. For example, if your offering is mostly B2B, a LinkedIn account is a must, whereas if you’re selling directly to teens think about newer platforms such a TikTok, if your products mean you need to target parents, Facebook is a must for you!

Start your social media journey by choosing the most relevant channels for you and make your content innovative and engaging, you can always expand to other channels in the future if your core offering evolves.

I think over the last 24 hours we’ve all been utterly appalled at some of the content on social media containing abhorrent racist views.

We would urge anyone and everyone on social media to familiarise yourself with the reporting process, and be part of the solution by reporting to the channel each and every time you see a post that contains racist content.

The mechanisms are there, but the only way we are going to make a change for the better is if we all work together and take proactive action by refusing to tolerate hate-filled content.

We’ve often discussed how great it is to be able to tap into trending topics across social media.

We must add a word of caution though! Do make sure your posts are relevant to the trending topic you are aiming to become involved with. If you would like to discuss your team supporting England, how you are going to watch the match, or any relevant products or information by all means find the trending hashtags. However, your post’s legitimacy will become diluted if you simply carry on posting as normal but add an irrelevant hashtag to the end in the hope you get noticed!

Enjoy finding some creative ways to make your offerings relevant to trending topics! And if you can’t? Start a trend yourself!

Sometimes “short and sweet” is all you need!

Did you know 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound? That means your immediate action needs to be to make your video offering compelling without audio.

Ensure any speech is subtitled – not only does this mean you can capture those watching in silence through choice, but also people with hearing impairments; accessibility of content is such good practice!

Make your videos short, fun and above all on brand; sharing your message by image only. Of course this is a challenge, but one that will be worth it!

Whenever you are new to social media as a method of promoting your business, of course the first thing you notice is how many followers or “likers” you have.

An important thing to remember is, whilst it is always a great idea to use the analytics social media channels provide to gauge your performance, the number of followers you have isn’t necessarily the best metric to measure how successful your social strategy is.

What matters most, is the level of connection and relationship with your followers, rather than the number.

1500 interested followers who will engage with your content and share your content add way more value than 15000 followers with whom you have no relationship.

Try and shift your mindset from numbers to relationships!

Something that we have really noticed over the last year or so, is how the way people use LinkedIn is really changing – and not always for the better.

Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at some LinkedIn-specific tips to help you get the most out of the platform both on a personal level and as a business.

Our first port of call is to ask you to think about how you interact with people.  Of course, the main reason to be on LinkedIn is to extend your business contacts – however how you make those connections matters.  Instead of requesting a connection with the standard “I’d like to add you to my professional network,” add a personal message e.g., if you have previously met or have mutual connections – remind them, if you’re cold-messaging make an introduction and let them know why you’re interested in connecting.

No change to the standard wording looks like a connection without much thought; and people are increasingly declining this type of generic request.

Remember, you will get out of any platform what you choose to put in!
