Remember social media is your online shop window, so every business with social media channels is putting themselves out there to be visible.

With such a wealth of information out there, don’t be afraid to take a look at what your competitors are doing social media wise! Obviously we aren’t advocating plagiarizing and we emphasise the importance of creating your own content, however market analysis can be useful to monitor established accounts within your sector to get an idea of what sort of posts work well, what timing works and even which channels are most successful for businesses like yours.

There are so many examples out there and freely available – make use of them! Just don’t get so bogged down in comparison you spend more time on their channels than your own!

Whilst creating content is key across your social media platforms, there are of course those days when inspiration simply doesn’t strike.

A really great way to help you out on those days when you’re suffering a bout of writer’s block is to create a social media calendar.  Quite simply pull together a list of dates that mixes key dates that are important to your business (maybe a sale, a new product launch, the anniversary of your opening) and more national dates you can have fun with e.g. National Cup of Tea Day, National Biscuit Day.

Dates like these give an immediate way to create content and have fun when you might be struggling for something to say.  Followers like to see the people they follow have fun, so don’t be afraid to let loose and create some great new content for dry spells!

For our final Tips on Tuesday of 2021 (yes, even we’re having a rest next week!) we’re giving you a generic tip.

Whilst we’ve often said how the consistency of social media posting is important, it is equally important for you to be recharged, rested and ready for all the challenges of 2022. By all means do some pertinent holiday posts, but then give yourself time away from insights, responses and general scrolling through your timeline.

When you’re rested and refreshed you will face the challenges of digital marketing and your online presence with renewed zeal.

With 2022 fast approaching (no we don’t quite know how either!), now is a good time to take stock of your online year!

It’s important to remember that social media – and your wider online presence – is an ever-changing landscape, and this has never been more true than the last two years!

At this time of year we always recommend reviewing your online year.  Check back using social media insights and analytical tools into which posts worked, and which were less successful.  You can then use the data you collect to create your online schedule and plan for next year!

Remember, as Warren Buffet said “it’s a good idea to review past mistakes before committing new ones.”

The great thing about social media, is the ability to reach people on a very small budget!

Have you thought about using the “Events” tool on Facebook?

If you have the type of business where you want people to physically attend a certain event, do try out this tool.  Whether you’re hosting a one-off event, would like people to attend on the first day of a sale, or even just arranging a get together, “Events” is a great way of creating a bit of a buzz surrounding your business and monitoring attendees. Certainly at this time of year with Christmas shopping and events in everyone’s mind, this tool can be so useful for getting the word out!

As with all tools on Facebook you can either use it organically, or simply add a small budget to boost your post to reach a wider audience. 

Why not give it a try and see what response you get.  Remember Facebook is all about encouraging interaction, and this could be a great way to start a conversation!

We love a plan. We especially love a social media marketing plan – you really need a firm outline of your social media aims and needs to make your channels as useful as possible.

However, we’re also a fan of flexibility and the ability to change direction.

If the last two years have taught us anything, it is that the best laid plans often come to nought and that it is ok to deviate from your plan.  We think of our social media plans as a guideline; the type of document you stick to when everything is normal rather than a piece of work that is set in stone.

As we’re faced daily with the potential for yet more change, don’t worry if you have to deviate from your plan.  Don’t worry if you haven’t the headspace to post for a few days and miss some posts you had planned.  There is always time to catch up.  Christmas is also a great time of year for some ad hoc posting – something away from the planned posts and the potential to have a little spontaneous fun. 

The most successful plans we have seen, whilst giving an overview of aims and content strands also allow the user to be flexible when necessary and acknowledges that this is very likely!

Oh it’s only November, there’s plenty of time……then you realise that Christmas Eve is four weeks on Friday!

It is very likely your working hours will be affected by the Christmas break.  Make decisions on when you will be open and available for contact and start rolling out the information to your online profiles now.

People are busy over Christmas – that’s a fact.  If you want to maintain attracting customers over the Christmas period, you need to give them the information as soon as possible so they can factor you into their plans!

There are only two sorts of people on social media, those who want more followers and those who are lying!

I’m often asked by clients how they can quickly increase their followers.  The short answer is, you can’t!

Social media is very much a slow burn.   Much like real life, relationships take time to foster and build; and these relationships need to be built before you can turn your followers into paying customers.   When you decide upon a social media strategy, you must acknowledge the need to commit for not only weeks, but months and even years. 

Remember, the number of likes and followers you have is nothing more than a measure of vanity.  What is important to you is the quality of follower – 100 followers who are engaged, are interested and who interact are of far more value than 1000 followers who are not!

You’ve, obviously, been following Tips on Tuesday from the start, and your social media profiles are absolutely fantastic.

But people know how to find them, right?

Don’t make people work to find your profiles.  Link them from anywhere and everywhere! Have your handles on your business cards, email signatures, websites, literature and make your usernames as intuitive as possible.  There is nothing more frustrating for someone who wants to listen to what you have to say, but cannot hear it because they can’t find it!

Make sure you make it as simple as possible to hear what you have to say!

We’ve spoken often about how important it is to add images to your posts on social media.

Studies show that after 72 hours people only remember 10% of what the read, however with the use of a carefully chosen image, that figure can rise to a massive 65%!

A few times recently, we’ve seen people posting “image for attention” in their posts, and the image used has no relevance whatsoever to the post in question.

Make sure when you use an image, you make it pertinent to your content.  A funny picture is lovely, but if it has no meaning it won’t be long before your followers will get bored.  

There is a vast stock of royalty free images on the web – make sure you choose carefully and share away!
